Swap ETH from Base to POL on Polygon

Swap ETH from Base to POL on Polygon. Native ETH leaves Base, and native POL is what arrives on Polygon.

Both lines can show 0xEeeeeEeeeEeEeeEeEeEeeEEEeeeeEeeeeeeeEEeE. On Base, chain 8453, that placeholder is ETH, an L2 gas coin, read on Basescan as the account balance. On Polygon, chain 137, it is POL, read on Polygonscan as the account balance. It is not an ERC-20. It is not WETH at 0x7ceB23fD6bC0adD59E62ac25578270cFf1b9f619. Leave some ETH on Base or the send cannot pay its own fee. You are changing exposure from ether to POL.

The placeholder is not a portable coin

Copying 0xEeeeeEeeeEeEeeEeEeEeeEEEeeeeEeeeeeeeEEeE between chains does not move a token. Each chain interprets it as its own gas coin. Chain id 8453 means you are selling ETH. Chain id 137 means you are buying POL. If the wallet header still says Ethereum, you are not looking at this route's destination at all.

POL replaced the MATIC habit

The fee symbol on Polygon is POL. Older guides say MATIC. A wallet that still labels the native balance with the old word is talking about the same gas coin, not about an extra ERC-20 you must approve. There is no approval on the ETH you send, and there is no token contract to open for the POL you receive.

When ether should have stayed ether

Stay off this page if you wanted WETH on Polygon, USDC, or USDT. Stay off it if you wanted ETH on Ethereum. Stay off it if you only needed a local wrap on Base. This route is a sale of ETH exposure into the Polygon fee coin. Trade on Base is where that ETH currently pays fees, until you sell it.

Confirm the account line

Polygonscan's native balance is the arrival record. A WETH transfer means a different quote was used. Basescan's ETH debit is the source record. Do not send a second swap because the hashes differ. The bridge wait is not given as a duration. Reject the quote when the minimum POL is too small.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best way to swap ETH from Base to POL on Polygon?

Both lines can show 0xEeeeeEeeeEeEeeEeEeEeeEEEeeeeEeeeeeeeEEeE. On Base, chain 8453, that placeholder is ETH, an L2 gas coin, read on Basescan as the account balance.

Why do ETH and POL share an address in the quote?

They do not share a contract. Interfaces write 0xEeeeeEeeeEeEeeEeEeEeeEEEeeeeEeeeeeeeEEeE for the native gas coin of the selected chain. On Base that is ETH. On Polygon that is POL. Basescan and Polygonscan show two account balances, not one token page. Chain ids 8453 and 137 keep them apart.

Is POL the same asset as WETH?

No. WETH on Polygon is 0x7ceB23fD6bC0adD59E62ac25578270cFf1b9f619, an ERC-20 you would see on Polygonscan as a token. POL is the gas coin and can pay fees on chain 137. If a pool asked for the WETH contract, this route delivered the wrong asset. POL can pay fees, and that WETH contract cannot.

What happens if I spend all of my Base ETH?

The transaction cannot pay the chain 8453 fee, so it should fail before a bridge message is sent. Leave a remainder. Native ETH is not approved. If your ether is wrapped at 0x4200000000000000000000000000000000000006, this native route will not see it until you unwrap. Unwrap on Base first, then sell the gas coin if POL is still the goal.
