Why the WETH contract exists

Ethereum applications often cannot hold native ETH inside the same interface they use for tokens, so they use WETH. Depositing ETH into 0xC02aaA39b223FE8D0A0e5C4F27eAD9083C756Cc2 mints WETH. Withdrawing burns WETH and returns ETH. This route buys that wrapped token from a USDC sale on Base. It does not call deposit on Base, and it does not leave you with spendable gas on Ethereum by itself.

Gas you still have to own

You pay ETH on Base to approve USDC and to send the swap. You need ETH on Ethereum later to approve WETH or to unwrap it. WETH sitting at the canonical contract will not pay those fees. Trade on Base is the source chain, and the source gas never migrates with the token. The bridge does not publish a completion time.

A short refusal list

Refuse the quote if the other side asked for Tether USDT or Maker DAI. Refuse it if they asked for Circle USDC on Ethereum. Refuse it if you confused WBTC with ETH: WBTC is a bitcoin receipt, not this asset, and it is not native bitcoin either. Refuse it if the minimum WETH is too small for the USDC you are spending.
