How to choose which chain to swap on

Written by XAUConnect Labs · Reviewed against live product behavior · Updated August 2026

The right chain to swap on is usually the chain where the tokens already sit, unless gas or missing liquidity forces a bridge. People optimize “cheapest chain” in the abstract and then pay a bridge plus a wrong-USDC variant to save a pool fee they already spent twice.

This is a decision guide for XAUConnect’s seven networks: Ethereum, Solana, BNB Chain, Polygon, Arbitrum, Base, and Avalanche.

Inventory first

List what you hold and where. If 90% of the position is Base USDC, swap on Base. Moving it to Solana “because fees are low” is a new risk stack. Only relocate size you intend to keep on the destination.

Match the token’s home liquidity

SOL pairs want Solana. BNB-native memecoins want BNB Chain. Deep ETH/USDC exists on Ethereum and on L2s — pick L2 for retail, mainnet for some large clips. Avalanche ecosystem tokens want C-Chain. Fighting a token’s home chain produces thin wrappers.

Gas versus impact

Ethereum gas hurts small trades. Solana and L2s make small trades viable. None of that helps if impact is 8% on a thin pool. Compare minimum received plus estimated gas, not gas alone.

Wallet and skill constraints

If you only have MetaMask, Solana is a new wallet to learn before you bridge. If you only have Phantom, EVM is the new skill. Do not cross VMs on a Friday night with size you have not tested.

Issuers choosing a launch chain

Launch where your users already swap and where you will lock liquidity. Cheap deploys (Base, BNB, Polygon) increase scam density around you. Ethereum deploys are expensive to fake at scale but expensive to experiment with. Solana is a different token program. Pick one home.

A simple scorecard

Write four lines: where the tokens live now; where the deepest honest pool is; what gas you already hold; whether you will trade here again this week. If three of four point at Base, swap on Base. If the asset is a BNB-native meme, BNB Chain wins even if Solana gas is prettier. If you only have Phantom, do not start with a 0x destination on a Friday. XAUConnect will quote whichever chain you select; it will not override a bad selector because a blog called that chain “cheap.”

Issuers: your chain choice is your support queue

If you launch on Solana, your DMs will be Phantom issues. If you launch on BNB Chain, they will be chain ID 56 issues. Pick the queue you can staff. XAUConnect has a swap guide per chain — link the one that matches the contract you actually deployed, not all seven.

Frequently asked questions

What is the cheapest chain to swap crypto?

Often Solana or an L2 for gas, but only if the pool is there. All-in cost is gas plus impact plus bridge if you had to move. See the dedicated cheapest-chain article.

Should I consolidate to one chain?

It simplifies gas and USDC variants. It also concentrates bridge risk when you move. Consolidate into the venue you actually trade.

Can XAUConnect pick the chain for me?

We pick routes on the chain you select (and composite paths for cross-chain). We do not silently move your inventory.

I have the same seed on all EVM chains. Isn’t that one chain?

One key, many ledgers. Select the ledger that holds the balance.
